The way to launch notebooks, then, is for us teachers to buy ourselves a book-or find a file, a box, a bag-and begin living our lives with the consciousness that "My life belongs to me, it matters." Once we have begun to incorporate notebooks into our lives, we can invite youngsters to do the same.

A wide awake-more attentive life can happen because we carry our notebooks with us throughout our daily life.

Living with a notebook has completely changed the way I view life and my teaching practice. Keeping a notebook allows me to tune in to my inner voice and the world around me. Each day it invites me to return to it and write. My notebook is so much more than a collection of bound paper. It is a part of me. My heart, soul, and thinking life are captured within it. It is a place for me to live and breathe with writing.

Here are a few examples of different entries in my notebook.
lists
quotes
sketching & writing off of nature
maps
writing off of a poem
layering a previous entry with new wonder or meaning
flagging collections and chunking or listing ideas around a topic
writing to think
